Alzheimer Café (Farnborough)

About

An Alzheimer Café is a gathering of people affected by and/or interested in dementia. Monthly gatherings are for the purpose of education, discussions, exchanging information about dementia, and for opportunities to socialise and meet others.

Attending an Alzheimer Café is free of charge. People can come and go as they please, just like at a cafe. Alzheimer Cafés are open to people with dementia (any type of dementia; for as long as a person is comfortable in the cafe environment and with thetalks and discussions); family carers, friends, neighbours, social network; anyone interested in dementia, professionally or personally.

The Farnborough Alzheimer Café meets 11 months of the year on the third Friday evening of the month (18.30-20.30) taking 1 month as an annual break, usually in August. Participants have purely social gatherings twice-yearly (usually in December for seasonal festivities, and in July for a summer event).

About Alzheimer Café UK

The Alzheimer Café opened in September 2000, a near duplicate of Dr Bere Miesen's highly successful cafe in the Netherlands, the first of which started in 1997. The purpose of the cafe is to provide education and a safe social space in which to discuss the many issues involved in having dementia and caring for someone with dementia. The Alzheimer Café has a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere and provides families and professionals with the oppportunity to share their feelings, discuss problems, give and receive support, guidance, informal education and information. All this happens within the Café's safe and sensitive environment. It also provides the opportunity to meet others in the same boat. There is a rolling programme of speakers and social activities.
